Ectoine (1,4,5,6-tetrahydro-2-methyl-4-pyrimidinecarboxylic acid) is a natural compound found in several species of bacteria. It is a compatible solute which serves as a protective substance by acting as an osmolyte and thus helps organisms survive extreme osmotic stress. Ectoine is found in high concentrations in halophilic microorganisms and confers resistance towards salt and temperature stress.

Ectoin is a very powerful, 100% natural stress-protection amino-acid, produced by so-called Extremolytes. Extremolytes are extraordinary molecules that microorganisms and plants produce to protect themselves from dryness and extreme temperature stresses in their habitats (deserts and frozen areas). Ectoin can serves as an emollient on skin and can also have a buffering and anti-pollution effect in cosmetic formulas. Chemically, ectoin is considered an osmolyte. What that means for skin is that as an osmolyte, ectoin helps maintain balanced hydration by maintaining the correct water balance in skin. In doing so, skin can better maintain a smooth, soft surface. Newer research indicates ectoin can also help protect skin from environmental stressors related to different types of natural light and pollutants. This is believed to happen in part because of its antioxidant ability as well as what seems to be a natural ability to protect skin from dehydration due to environmental exposure.

1. Cellular protection and boosting of skins self-defense

2. Anti-pollution efficacy

3. Prevention of UV-induced skin damage

4. Anti-aging (Anti-Wrinkle, Skin Elasticity, Skin Scaling / Roughness) power thanks to its wrinkle reduction activity and skin smoothing property

5. Long-term moisturizing

6. Improvement of skin roughness and scaling

7. Skin barrier repair and reinforcement

8. Inflammation reduction and anti-irritant

9. UVA / UVB, IR-A, and visible light protection on a cellular level

10. Hair Follicles Protection

11. Scalp Protection / Repair

Ectoine is used as an active ingredient in skin care and sun protection products. It stabilizes proteins and other cellular structures and protects the skin from stresses like UV irradiation and dryness.

Ectoin has hydrating, barrier regulating, stabilizing and soothing properties on the skin.  All these properties ensure that it is suitable for the care of dry, sensitive and mature skin, as well as sun protection products.
